Old synonym:
Marinococcus hispanicus Marquez et al. 1990.
Gram-positive cocci, 1.0-2.0 μm, occuring singly, in pairs, tetrads or clumps. Non-
motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on 10% salt complex medium are round and smooth and form a
non-diffusible, reddish orange pigment. Broth cultures are uniformly turbid. Strictly
aerobic. Hemolysis is produced. Growth occurs at pH 5.0-9.0; optimum at pH 7.5.
Moderately halophilic; Growth occurs in media containing 0.5-25% NaCl; optimum
10% NaCl.  No growth occurs in the absence of NaCl. Grows at 15-37 ºC; optimal
growth at 37 ºC.
Isolated from soils and ponds of a solar saltern near Alicante, Spain.

Positive results for catalase, gelatin hydrolysis, methyl red test, nitrates reduction, oxidase, acid production from: fructose, galactose,
glycerol, D-glucose
and D-mannitol.
Can utilize as sole carbon and energy sources: D-glucose, D-mannose, L-raffinose, L-rhamnose, ribose, salicin
and sucrose.

Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, casein  hydrolysis, citrate utilization, H
2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase,  
ornithine decarboxylase, phenylalanine deaminase, Tween 80 hydrolysis, tyrosine hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer reaction, acid
production from: arabinose, lactose, D-trehalose
and xylose.

Variable results for aesculin hydrolysis, DN-ase, starch hydrolysis, ONPG, urease, acid production from: maltose
and sucrose.
