Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Salinicoccus, Salinicoccus
kunmingensis Chen et al. 2007.
Gram-positive cocci, 0.8-1.2 μm, occuring singly, in pairs, tetrads or clumps. Non-
motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are circular, convex, yellow-pigmented and non-translucent with shiny,
glistening surfaces and entire margins, 2-3 mm in diameter after 3 days on Marine
Agar supplemented with 8 % (w/v) NaCl at pH 8.0 and 37 ºC. Also grows well on MA
supplemented with 2-15 % (w/v) MgCl2 or KCl instead of NaCl. Obligately aerobic.
Moderately halophilic; Growth occurs in media containing 0.5-25% NaCl; optimum
8-10% NaCl. Grows at 4-45 ºC; optimal growth at 37 ºC. Grows in pH 6.0-10.0;
optimum pH 8.0.
Isolated from a brine sample collected from the Yipinglang salt mine in Kunming, China.
Susceptible to ampicillin (30 mg), chloramphenicol (30 μg), nalidixic acid (20 μg), novobiocin (30 μg), rifampicin (5 μg) and tetracycline
(30 μg). Resistant to gentamicin (10 μg), kanamycin (30 μg), lincomycin (2 μg), polymyxin B (30 μg) and streptomycin(10 μg).

Positive results for aesculin hydrolysis, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase, cystine arylamidase,
alpha-chymotrypsin,esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), lipase (C14), leucine arylamidase, alpha-mannosidase, nitrate reduction,
oxidase, starch hydrolysis, Tween 80 hydrolysis, acid production from: amygdalin, N-acetylglucosamine, D-fructose, inositol,
D-lactose, D-mannitol and sucrose.
In Biolog GP2 plates, the following substrates are used as sole carbon and energy sources: N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, amygdalin,
L-arabinose, D-cellobiose, D-fructose, D-glucose, glycerol, chydroxybutyric acid, myo-inositol, alpha-D-lactose, D-mannitol,
D-mannose, D-psicose, D-raffinose, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, sucrose, trehalose, Tween 40, L-alaninamide and L-asparagine.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, casein hydrolysis, chitin hydrolysis, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, alpha- and beta-
glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, beta-galactosidase (ONPG), gelatin hydrolysis (but gelatinase
detected !?), H2S production, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, methyl red test, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase,
trypsin, Tween 20 hydrolysis, urease, valine arylamidase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: D-galactose, D-glucose,
glycerol, maltose and trehalose.
