Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus
muscae Hajek et al. 1992.
Gram-positive cocci, 0.4-1.1μm in diameter; non-motile, non-sporing, occuring singly
or forming clumps.
Gray-white, opaque, convex, low, with raised centres, somewhat glistening, and
butyrous; S-type colonies, 5-6 mm in diameter after 5 days incubation at 37 ºC on P
agar. Hemolytic on sheep blood agar. Facultatively anaerobic, growth temperature
35-37 ºC. No growth at 10 or 45 ºC. Grow in 10% NaCl medium but not in 15% NaCl.
Other growth media: Trypticase Soy Agar ± 5% sheep blood, Trypticase Soy Broth.
Isolated from the house fly (Musca domestica) & the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans). Sensible to novobiocin. Resistant to lysozyme
and bacitracin.
Unknown. Wound infections possible.
