Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Staphylococcus, Staphylococcus
pseudintermedius Devriese et al. 2005. Biochemically very close to S. intermedius and S. delphini.
Gram-positive cocci, non-motile, non-spore-forming.
Rounded, opaque colonies, surrounded by double zone hemolysis. Facultatively
anaerobic, 28-37 ºC. Media: Trypticase Soy Yeast extract Agar ± 5% sheep blood,
Trypticase Soy Yeast extract Broth.
Isolated from cat (lungs), dog, horse and parrot specimens. Sensible to novobiocin and polymyxin B. Resistant to deferoxamine.
Uncertain pathogenicity (although coagulase, DN-ase and haemolysins are positive). One report of canine pyoderma in Brasil.
Another S. pseudintermedius strain was isolated from canine purulent skin infection in Romania (admin note).

Positive results for nitrate reduction, arginine dihydrolase, urease, acetoin production,
DN-ase, catalase, heat-stable nuclease, pyrrolidonyl arylamidase, acid production
from: fructose, galactose, mannose, ribose, sucrose and trehalose.
Negative results for oxidase, clumping factor, fibrinolysin, beta-glucuronidase, arabinose, cellobiose, erythritol, fucose, melezitose,
amygdalin, arbutin, aesculin, salicin, D-raffinose, starch, glycogen, 2- or 5-ketogluconate, xylitol and xylose.
Variable results for alkaline phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, beta-galactosidase, acid production from: lactose, mannitol and
turanose.
