Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Streptococcaceae, Genus Streptococcus, Streptococcus
macacae Beighton et al. 1984. Member of the "Mutans group".
No reaction with Lancefield antisera.
Gram-positive cocci, grouped in chains. Alpha-hemolytic.
Transparent and 1 to 2 mm in diameter colonies, after 3 days of incubation. A white, 1
mm in diameter, erose, crumbly, type of colony may occur.
Growth at 37.0 ºC, no growth at 45 ºC. Grow poorly in air, but growth is stimulated
by the presence of CO2. Grow on : Trypticase soy agar, Sheep blood agar,
Brain-hearth infusion agar / broth; grow with 40% bile and 0.25% optocin. No growth
at pH 9.6 or in 6.5% NaCl media.
Isolated from the dental plaque of monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) & humans. Susceptible to bacitracin (20 μg/ml).
Unknown (isolated primarily from dental plaque samples). A possible cause of endocarditis.

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer reaction, acid production from: N-acetyl glucosamine,
amygdalin, cellobiose, fructose, glucose, galactose, maltose, mannitol, sucrose, trehalose and raffinose.
Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, H2O2 production, urease, acid production from: adonitol, arabinose, dextrin, glycerol, glycogen,
inositol, inulin, melezitose, melibiose, ribose, starch, sorbose, xylitol and xylose.
Sorbitol is fermented slowly, starch and blue dextran are weakly hydrolyzed.
