Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Streptococcaceae, Genus Streptococcus, Streptococcus
oligofermentans Tong et al. 2003. Member of the "Mitis group".
According to Jensen et al. (2016), this species is a later heterotypic synonym of
Streptococcus cristatus corrig. Handley et al. 1991.
Gram-positive cocci, nonmotile, nonspore-forming, 0.7 µm in diameter, arranged in
short chains.
Alpha-haemolytic, rough, dark yellow, 0.5-1.0 mm in diameter colonies (24 h).
Facultatively anaerobic, optimal growth at 37.0 ºC. Growth at 10 and 45 ºC is negative.
Grows on trypticase soy agar with defibrinated sheep blood, BHI blood agar. Range of
pH for growth is 5.3-8.9; optimum pH 7.0.
Isolated from dental plaque and saliva of caries-free humans.
Streptococcus oligofermentans may inhibit Streptococcus mutans through conversion of lactic acid into hydrogen peroxide.
Oral bacteria. May cause endocarditis.

Positive results for hydrolysis of hippurate, acid production from D-glucose,
mannose, maltose and sucrose. Glucose fermentation results exclusively in lactic
acid production which may be degraded to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).
Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, alkaline phosphatase, esculin hydrolysis,
alpha- or beta-galactosidase, Voges-Proskauer reaction, acid production from
arbutin, amygdalin, arabinose, cellobiose, glycogen, inulin, melibiose, mannitol,
ribose, salicin, sorbitol and starch.
Acid production from lactose, trehalose and raffinose is variable.
