Member of the "mutans group".
No reaction with Lancefield antisera.
Gram-positive, 0.5-0.75 um, nonmotile, nonspore-forming, cocci, arranged in pairs or
short chains.
Nonhemolytic on blood agar, white, small colonies; 0.75-1.0 mm in diameter.
Facultatively anaerobic (microaerophilic), optimal growth at 37.0 ºC. Grows on:
Trypticase soy agar with 5% defibrinated horse blood, Mitis salivarius agar.
Isolated from swine oral cavity. Resistant to bacitracin.
Oral bacteria, cariogenic activity is favorized by an adhesive, insoluble glucan produced from sucrose.

Positive results for alanine phenylalanine, proline arylamidase, beta-glucosidase, alpha-glucosidase, alpha-galactosidase, acid
phosphatase, leucine arylamidase, valine arylamidase, cystine arylamidase, Voges-Proskauer reaction, acid production from
D-glucose, galactose, D-fructose, D-mannose, mannitol, sorbitol, N-acetylglucosamine, amygdalin, arbutin, aesculin, salicin,
cellobiose, maltose, lactose, melibiose, sucrose, trehalose, inulin, D-raffinose, beta-gentiobiose, methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside and
tagatose.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase, beta-glucuronidase, beta-galactosidase, N-acetyl-beta-
glucosaminidase and hippurate hydrolysis.
