Description is based on API 20 Strep, API 50 CH and Rapid ID 32 STREP results.
The strain ATCC 15914 was originally identified as Streptococus mitis.
Positive results for leucine aminopeptidase, alanyl-phenylalanyl-proline arylamidase, acid production from: D-fructose, D-galactose,
D-glucose, lactose, D-mannose, maltose, pullulan, raffinose, starch and sucrose.
Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, arginine hydrolysis, catalase, alpha-D-galactosidase, esculin hydrolysis, pyrrolidonyl
arylamidase, beta-glucuronidase, beta-glucosidase, hippurate hydrolysis, pyroglutamic acid arylamidase, beta-mannosidase,
urease, glycyl-tryptophan arylamidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, acid production from: arabinose, arabitol, alpha-cyclodextrin,
glycogen, inulin, D-mannitol, melibiose, melezitose, methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside, D-ribose, D-sorbitol and D-tagatose.
Trehalose fermentation is variable. Beta-D-galactosidase production depends on the substrate.

Gram-positive cocci, 0.5-1.0 μm in diameter, occurring in chains. Non-motile. Non-
spore-forming.
Colonies on sheep blood agar are circular, smooth, white to greyish, convex,
alpha-hemolytic and 0.5-1.0 mm in diameter after 24 h of incubation at 37 ºC in
aerobic atmosphere. Facultatively anaerobic; no enhancement of growth in 5 % CO2.
Growth occurs at 25-42 ºC but not in 6.5 % NaCl medium.
Isolated from human clinical samples.
Unknown; isolated from blood cultures of patients with endocarditis, meningitis and spondylodiscitis.
