Gram-negative, curved rods, 0.6-0.8 x 2-3 µm, motile. No lateral flagella on solid
media. Not swarming on complex media.
Produces a nondiffusible red (“prodigiosin-like”) pigment.
Can grow in nutrient broth with: 1% NaCl, 6% NaCl, 8% NaCl & 10% NaCl. No growth
in 0% NaCl,  variable growth in 12% NaCl.
Optimal growth at  30 - 40 ºC. No growth at 4 ºC.
Isolated from estuary water and salt marsh mud of the eastern coast of the USA and from a hyper saline lake in Baja California.
Sensible to O/129 vibriostatic agent (10 µg).

Positive results for citrate utilization (Simmons), gelatin hydrolysis (1% NaCl, 22 °C),
lipase, gas production from D-glucose, acid from: L-arabinose, D-glucose, D-galactose,
cellobiose, lactose, maltose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, salicin, sucrose, trehalose and
D-xylose.

Negative results for indole (Heart Infusion Broth, 1%NaCl), arginine (1%NaCl), lysine (1%NaCl), ornithine (1%NaCl), nitrate reduction
to nitrite, oxidase, acid production from: D-adonitol, D-arabitol, dulcitol, myo-inositol, raffinose and L-rhamnose.

Variable results for Voges-Proskauer (1%NaCl), acid production from melibiose & D-sorbitol.
