Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Aeromonadales, Family Aeromonadaceae, Genus
Aeromonas, Aeromonas bivalvium Minana-Galbis et al. 2007.
Gram-negative, straight, coccoids / rods 0.5-2.0 x 0.3-1.0 µm. Motile by a polar
flagellum.
Colonies on TSA are 3-4 mm in diameter, opaque, circular and beige in colour after
48 hours at 25 ºC. No brown diffusible pigment is produced. Grow aerobically and
anaerobically. Growth occurs at 4-40.5 ºC (variable), optimum 30-37 ºC. Can grow in
nutrient broth with: 0 and 3% NaCl, weakly at 6% NaCl, but not at 7% NaCl. Can grow
at pH 9.0, but not at pH 4.5.
Grows on MacConkey agar and m-Aeromonas-selective agar base Havelaar.
Isolated from bivalve molluscs: cockles (Cardium sp.) and razor shells (Ensis sp.), respectively, from retail markets in Barcelona
(Spain).
Resistant to vibriostatic agent O/129 (150 µg), amoxycillin + clavulanic acid (30 µg), ampicillin (10 µg), erythromycin (15 µg) and
penicillin G (10 µg).

Positive results for catalase, oxidase, nitrate reduction, indole production, methyl red, ONPG, citrate utilization, gelatin hydrolysis,
lysine decarboxylase, arbutin hydrolysis, DN-ase, aesculin hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, acid production from: D-glucose (without gas
production), L-arabinose, arbutin, dextrin, D-galactose, glycerol, D-mannitol, salicin, sucrose and D-trehalose.
Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, ornithine decarboxylase, Voges–Proskauer test, H2S production from cysteine thiosulfate,
elastin hydrolysis, urea hydrolysis, xanthine hydrolysis, acid production from: lactose, D-mannose, D-melibiose, D-raffinose, L-
rhamnose, sorbitol and D-xylose.
